A Decision Made For Me?

I’ve got an interview in Minneapolis next week. I’ve only talked to the woman from the staffing agency. She sounds highly enthusiastic. But I’m trying not to be overly optimistic. I suppose if I were more optimistic that would increase my chances of getting it. But I’m all about avoiding discomfort, so I’m already managing my expectations for the possibility I won’t get it. But her enthusiasm is a bit infectious, so I can’t help being excited myself.

The job sounds decent, the little I know about it. I have technical aptitude, I’m just not creative at all. So this should be a lot less mentally taxing. Which may prove to be less than fulfilling down the line, but at the moment it’s just what I’m looking for. Pay is better than some similar positions I’ve seen, but not great. The company is great, though. They’ve had some interesting things happening for them lately. And it sounds like the benefits and such should be pretty good.

The first thing my mom did was give me shit about how it’s not enough money. “You’re never gonna buy a house making [that amount of money].” I don’t think she understands that I don’t care as long as I get out of her house. I told her I was less concerned about making big bucks than enjoying life and not hating my job.

I was on my way to just moving anyway. And I couldn’t decide between Minneapolis and Madison. So I think this is a sign. If I don’t get this job, I’m gonna make Minneapolis my destination anyway (this is subject to change).

So I’m taking off this weekend and will be there half of next week. I’m already excited.

    Where are we going first?

To Sex World or out for lunch?

I’m glad this opportunity presented itself and I hope it works out for you.

Excellent response to your Mom, too. Owning a home doesn’t complete a person, any more than having kids does. Many people are perfectly happy not doing any of those things. It’s up to the individual.

Okay, to be fair, I don’t think my mom quite meant it that seriously, it just rubbed me the wrong way. But my sister and I have had many a conversation (as my mom has given input on my sister’s job search) about how she seems to be more focused on money than anything. Of course we’d all like to make more than $25k or $30k a year, but if you’re just starting out, and the job is useful to your career (and if you *gasp* like it), then it doesn’t have to be the end of the world.

And if there’s one thing I’ve learned about myself, just because I make more money doesn’t mean I have more money, so… yeah.

Not that you need advice from a total stranger, but I just moved back to Cleveland after 4 winters in Minneapolis and miss it a lot. Madison is charming in it’s own right (State Street Brats!)and it’s nice to be in a college town, but Minneapolis is great. Focus on renting in the Minnetonka/Eden Prairie/Chanhassen area as I am sure your company will likely be close by. Good luck! (p.s. Sex World is creepy!)

I’d argue there are far more charming things about Madison than State Street Brats (heh), but I like that Minneapolis has a little more hustle and bustle to it. And sports! If this particular job pans out, I’ll be working in Eden Prairie. I’d like to live in the city but I don’t want to commute that far, so I may just end up back in St. Louis Park again.

    Eek! I’m excited.

I think you would love being in Mpls! I love living in Minnesota. Granted, I don’t live in Mpls, but this state is great. The ppl are very nice. The weather can be awful, but it can also be beautiful.
Plus, I know Buddha would love to show off his live poetry for you!

See, there’s now way I could live in MN if I wasn’t in the Cities. No way, no how. I also need to hang out in St. Paul more. Didn’t do enough of that.

Eek! There was a chance you were going to move to Madison? That would have been awesome! But you need to go where your heart and head take you. Besides, you need to go home to visit once in a while, and Madison’s on the way. :) Good luck!
