Publius

My mom mentioned that the brother of one of my high school friends was on the local news politics show this morning. He was listed as the executive director of Publius.Org. The subject was P2P file-sharing. I didn’t see it, so I’m not sure what qualifies him to be talking about all that, but there he was. His dad is a law professor at the University of Detroit Mercy and he used to be on the news all the time as sort of a local legal expert, so maybe that’s how he got the gig.

But anyway, back to Publius.Org. The website says it’s “evolving voter education and civic participation.” The name Publius has a long history, and “was often used as a pseudonym for authors of public statements who did not want their identity to cloud people’s willingness to consider their ideas.”

At the very least, it looks like a nifty way to get all your voting information (Publius.Org claims to be “world’s first online ballot generator based on the voter registration information supplied by the state’s Qualified Voter File”). If you’re registered, you can just type your name or address in and it gives you your polling place with a map, shows you what your ballot looks like for the upcoming election, gives you important election-related dates, and even gives you instructions on how to vote based on the method used at your polling place. It links to pertinent information on the state of Michigan’s website and to the state’s version of Publius. It also lists a number of Digital Bridge Programs (aimed at crossing the Digital Divide). You can contact Publius.Org for more info on those.

The Letter Of The Day Is E

E is for Estonia, will it join the EU? E is for expensive, entrenched “entitlements”. E is for Energizer Bunny-powered electrodes. E is for expecting the eye of the storm. E is for endorsements. (Howard Dean’s losing them each time he opens his mouth.)…

How fascinating. The Web site seems like a good idea, though I don’t want to give him too much credit, as he tends to get a large head. but whatever.

Em, it’s the older brother, not the younger one. ;) But maybe it’s a family trait.
