The Space Race and Personal Computing

“Just as mankind was destined to land on the moon, we will all own the ubiquitous ‘global’ handheld one day, so say most futurists. Then again, we went to the moon more than 20 years ago and haven’t been back, so maybe the ‘global’ handheld will never be.”

John Manzione from MacNETv2 says the future is in technology convergence, who’s biggest enemy is Microsoft (with all their proprietary formats), and who’s biggest ally is Apple (with their dedication to OS X’s compatibility with hundreds of devices). He then lays out a scenario that illustrates the abilities of a device that he believes should be the next destination for personal computing. It basically involves being able to access and control everything you have via the internet, with one device, at all times. Sort of like a PDA on crack. He also points out that all these technologies exist in some form already, they’re just not tied together.

It seems to me like that’s the natural evolution of technology, provided the government doesn’t step in and muck it up. It’s fun to dream about the possibilities.
